India win U19 World Cup: VVS Laxman lauds Yash Dhull & Co’s resilience after Covid outbreak to clinch record 5th title

Team India clinched a record-extending fifth U19 World  Cup title after they defeated England by four wickets on Sunday. The campaign was a huge success especially considering how the team dealt with the COVID-19 outbreak during the group stages.

VVS Laxman, the chief of NCA and in charge of the development of the U-19 and A teams lauded the team’s effort in clinching the title. He said, “Firstly, huge congratulations to the selection committee, because it was a new selection committee and it was quite challenging for them to identify this group and after that I think it’s the coaching staff with Hrishikesh as the head coach, Sairaj Munish Bali and all the support staff. The way they brought this group together, they worked really hard and won the Asia Cup and the preparation to this World Cup was fantastic.”

Laxman added, “In the middle of the tournament we all know what happened to the boys, to test positive but to show that kind of resilience and positive attitude is exemplary. I think BCCI has to be complemented, the number of tournaments each age group players get to play, but unfortunately over the last two years because of Covid they didn’t play any tournament and that’s why this win is very special. It is just a learning process and everyone understands that in the group, Exciting times for all of them.”

After their tournament opener against South Africa, India had only 11 players available for their remaining two games, with captain Yash Dhull and vice-captain Shaik Rasheed also ruled out. Nishant Sindhu stood in as captain while the support staff helped around with drinks on the field as the team waited for replacement players. Dhull and Co. returned in time for the quarter-final against Bangladesh and were available until the final.
