It was a telling blow to Shikhar Dhawan, who is fighting to keep his place in the side ahead of the 50-over World Cup next year. Dhawan is locked in competition for a solitary slot alongside vice-captain KL Rahul, promising Ruturaj Gaikwad and Mayank Agarwal, and missing games are not ideal for the veteran opener.
The 35-year-old did find form in South Africa, scoring two half-centuries in a rather dull whitewash for Team India and a reunion was on the cards with long-time partner Rohit Sharma only for COVID-19 to lay waste to those plans.
The results meant that the aforementioned trio will miss the 1st ODI on Sunday, February 6 and are in doubt for the 2nd set to be played next week on February 9. All three ODIs are set to be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera. The participation of the aforementioned players is subject to them returning negative RT-PCR results in the coming days.
