Head coach Chris Silverwood’s future is also unclear & ECB is likely to sack the beleagured coach. As per the reports in English media, no further update in regard to this was given on Tuesday.
- Under Silverwood, the man Giles appointed in 2019, they have won only one of their past 14 Tests.
- Instead, the ECB have accepted the recommendation of Strauss in his role as chair of their influential cricket committee that they could not maintain the status quo after the Ashes debacle.
ECB chief executive Tom Harrison said: “Off the back of a disappointing men’s Ashes we must ensure we put in place the conditions across our game to enable our Test team to succeed.”
Giles and coach Silverwood produced a 10,000-word report on the Aussie tour, which was presented to Strauss and discussed at an ECB board meeting on Tuesday.
Within 24 hours, Giles, had got the push — with Strauss taking over on an interim basis ahead of next month’s Test tour of the West Indies.
Many expect Silverwood to follow swiftly.
Giles said: “The past couple of years have been incredibly challenging and I’m proud of what we’ve been able to deliver.
“Despite these challenges, over the past three years, we have become 50-over world champions, the top-ranked T20I side in the world and we remain the fourth-ranked Test team.”
Andrew Stauss to replace Giles: Strauss has now returned on an interim basis to his old role – as managing director of England Cricket.
Straus was earlier forced to withdraw from the role in 2019 for family reasons after the death of his wife Ruth.
The former England captain will be ‘putting arrangements in place’ for the three-Test tour of the Caribbean next month, with England due to leave for Antigua on February 24.
Strauss will now decide the immediate future of England Cricket team.
England is due to tour West Indies for test series & Strauss will decide if he picks the squad for the West Indies along with Silverwood or SACK him.
It is being reported that Strauss is set to sack Silverwood. Surrey director of cricket Alec Stewart is tipped to replace Silverwood.
