Apart from changes in the driver lists, this new season will have some fresh rules regarding the F1 car. Follow Formula 1 Updates on InsideSport.IN

In the turbo-hybrid era, 2014-21 had been considered an era of greatness. New engines, new models, and rules defined a new era in Formula 1 that was dominated by Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton. However, F1 will have some new changes from 2022 which will greatly improve the racing and improve the racing conditions in a Grand Prix.

The new rules come with some exclusive changes which aim at making overtaking easier, thereby making the sport more and more competitive. Apart from changes in the size of tires, there will be massive changes in the aerodynamics of the car. InsideSport takes a look at the changes in the 2022 season.

Tyres: There has been a change in the size of the tires. Pirelli the 150-year-old tire manufacturer will continue producing tires for the 10 teams in 2022. However, the change in the size of the tires will be one of the key makeovers in 2022. Ditching the 13 inches, there will be new 18-inch low-profile tires. These 18-inch tires will have considerably less overheating and thus will facilitate better racing. The low profile nature of the tires will decrease sidewall deflection of the tires and thus will play an active role in enhancing the aerodynamics of the car.

Wheel Covers: The wheel covers will be back after making their last appearance in 2009. These wheel covers help out by removing the turbulent air caused by the wheels. Over-wheel winglets will also be introduced this season. These will help in aerodynamics and will direct the front tires away from the rear wing.

Front Wing and Nose: A brand new concept in terms of the front wing and the nose of the car will be incorporated in 2022. There will be a considerable change in the shape of the front wing despite them becoming more simple over the years. The front wing and the nose will be responsible for generating downforce and producing less turbulent air for the car currently behind.

With less dirty air, it will help the car behind catch up more easily, helping in better overtakes and a lot of wheel-to-wheel battles.

Overcoming Downforce loss: One of the brand new concepts of this F1 2022 car would be to minimize the loss of downforce. It has been found out that a trailing car experiences around a 50% loss of downforce owing to turbulent air or dirty air. This makes it difficult for the car behind to overtake the car in front. In a bid to facilitate better racing and overtaking, the new designs in the shape and the aerodynamic aspect of the car will count to less loss of downforce.

Aerodynamics: Fully shaped underfloor tunnels will be present in the new 2022 F1 car. This will increase the amount of downforce that will be produced by the car. In this new car, the downforce in the underfloor will be conserved in the tunnels and thus better downforce vortices would be created, thereby making racing easier. In simple terms, the dirty air will be ejected upward, helping in better overtaking.

Sustainable Fuel: There will be a change in the fuel of cars from 2022. As of last year, around 5-7% of sustainable fuel components were used in the cars. But from 2022, around 10% of sustainable fuel components would be mixed in the fuel in F1’s bid for promoting clean fuel to be used in racing.

Rear Wing Changes: New rolled tips will be added to the rear wings of the car in 2022. These tips are mushroom-shaped and will help reduce the dirty air. The present wing tips protrude the air outwards which turns into dirty air for the car behind. The new rolled tips will reduce the dirty air.

Power Units: There will not be any change in the power unit of the cars. The same power unit from 2021 will be used in 2022. However, the bodywork will be different which would focus more on the safety of the driver and the car.
