In a statement, CSA urged Radio 2000 to broadcast the live commentary as the three-match Test series will be played behind closed doors due to Covid-19 pandemic. Now, it has decided to do so, dismissing previous claims that it would not broadcast the live commentary on Radio 2000.

“The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has noted the misinformation on social media regarding the broadcast of the Protea Inbound Tour matches on Radio 2000. The social media status updates insinuate that Radio 2000 will not broadcast this tour and this is not the case,” SABC’s media relations manager, Mmoni Seapolelo said in a statement.
“The SABC would like to dispel this misinformation and state that Radio 2000 will broadcast three live updates (duration of three to five minutes) every hour and stream full live commentary on the station’s website.”

Earlier, SABC’s general manager for sports, Gary Rathbone, told Sport24 that Radio 2000 will not be broadcasting the live commentary of the India vs South Africa series due to the shift to being a commercial station. He added that it takes a huge chunk of its revenue out due to the longer duration of cricket matches.
“They say that it takes too much time and it disrupts the other programming that they have. Those programmes have revenue … they are trying to build the commercial values of the station and cricket is disrupting that,” Rathbone told Sports24.
“I have been fighting this with the relevant executives, but the position is that they have to support Radio 2000’s attempts to be more successful from a commercial basis, and they support their decision not to carry the cricket,” Rathbone added.

Following that, there was an outcry from fans and they demanded Radio 2000 to broadcast the live commentary. CSA too issued a statement urging the SABC to not discard the programme.
“Cricket fans are understandably disappointed at not being able to attend the forthcoming Test and ODI series against India. The decision was necessitated by the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic, and the fourth wave that the country is grappling with,” CSA said in a statement.
“The India series has generated huge interest across the country (and globally), with fans eager to get a blow-by-blow account of their favourite sport. With not being able to be at the stadiums cricket fans will be relying on broadcasters to enjoy the live-action. In addition to television broadcasts fans are drawn to the unique perspectives provided by the ball-by-ball commentary on Radio 2000, SABC’s flagship sports radio platform,” it added.

The India vs South Africa series is highly anticipated as Virat Kohli & Co are chasing history and are aiming to break the 29-year old jinx. With no stadium attendance, cricket fans hoped to listen to the commentary live while on their daily work. CSA has requested the SABC management to reconsider their decision. Cricket South Africa’s board chairperson Lawson Naidoo said they were hugely disappointed by the development.
