Root walked in to bat on Day 2 of the second Ashes 2021-22 Test after England lost two quick wickets in the final session. On Saturday, the 30-year-old started from his overnight score of five and stitched a solid partnership with Dawid Malan, surpassing the records of  Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar and Michael Clarke in the process.

Earlier, during the first Test in Brisbane, Joe Root had went past former England captain Michael Vaughan to own the record for highest Test run-scorer in a calendar year from the country. Vaughan had scored 1481 runs in 2002.

The Yorskshire batsman is averaging over 65 in Test cricket this year. He has six hundred and 2 fifties to his name. During the first Test, Root had missed on his 7th century of the year by 11 runs.
