Ruturaj Gaikwad became just the fourth cricketer to score four hundreds in a single Vijay Hazare Trophy edition after he scored yet another fine century on Tuesday. Gaikwad scored a fine 168 to single-handedly take his side to win, as Maharashtra chased down 309 with seven balls to spare. The 24-year-old now tallies 603 runs in just five games with a stellar average of 150.75, scoring 224 runs more than second-best Manan Vohra.

Virat Kohli, Devdutt Padikkal and Prithvi Shaw are the only players to have previously scored four centuries in a single Vijay Hazare Trophy edition. Prithvi Shaw holds the record for the most runs scored in a single season after he plundered 897 runs in 2021 to help Mumbai win the title.

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) star’s hopes of overtaking that record ended after Maharashtra were knocked out in the group stage. Gaikwad and Co. won four of their five matches, but finished third in the group on net run-rate and had to bow out of the competition.

Ruturaj Gaikwad nonetheless earned plaudits for his showing and remains in contention to be named in the squad for the ODI series against South Africa. It marks the continuation of a fine year for the 24-year-old, who has become a household name in the country. Gaikwad won the Orange Cap in IPL 2021, scoring 635 runs including a century and four half-centuries. He was subsequently retained by CSK for a staggering Rs 6 crore.
