Aus vs Eng LIVE – James Anderson Ruled Out: England has lost their leading and the most experienced bowler for the opening test. Anderson, 39, has 632 wickets and is Test cricket’s greatest wicket-taking quick but will not be available for the 1st match.

England have opted not to risk Anderson in the First Ashes Test as he manages a minor calf issue.

With two pink-ball Tests set to be played in the series – including the Second Test in Adelaide – England are keen to have Anderson at full tilt, so he will sit out the opener.

Given the condensed nature of the series, the second Test starts on December 16, which is quickly followed by the Boxing Day Test on December 26 & Joe Root wants Anderson fully ready for those 2 matches.

Anderson is 39 and had to withdraw from the last Ashes series after just four overs at Edgbaston with another muscle injury.

AUS vs ENG LIVE: Who will play in place of Anderson in England Playing XI? Chris Woakes is set to play in Anderson’s place, with Mark Wood and Ollie Robinson also likely to make the XI.

Whether Anderson’s evergreen partner Stuart Broad plays depends on whether they opt for a spinner, Jack Leach. The spinner appears favourite to play.

Broad, 35, has not played since early August due to a calf tear. Given their limited warm-up England are wary of overburdening their ageing champions Anderson and Broad.

Ben Stokes will complete a five-man attack, but is unlikely to be overworked as he also eases back into action.
