After the game, in the post-match analysis former France captain and Ronaldo’s good friend Patrice Evra decided to blast Jamie Carragher for his criticisms of Cristiano Ronaldo, urging him to ‘stay in his lane’ after Ronaldo’s record-breaking 801st goal.
Evra said, “There’s lot of talk about this player and I really don’t understand it. Some player like Jamie Carragher he had 775 games, today Cristiano scored 801 goals. And those kind of people talk about Cristiano.”
“Sometimes I just think people have to stay in their lane and I don’t understand that hate. Sometimes people wake up and want to talk about Cristiano Ronaldo.”
Shearer interrupted: “You have to put that into perspective, by the way. 801 goals. 801! Bonkers. We (Henry and I) might have reached that landmark if we had our training goals!”
Ronaldo’s first goal of the night made it 2-1, sweeping home a Marcus Rashford cross first-time into the bottom corner beating Aaron Ramsdale. Then CR7 converted from the spot after Fred was brought down in the box by Martin Odegaard, in what turned out to be the winner.
Why did Patrice go after his former Sky Sports colleague Jamie Carragher (rift between Jamie Carragher and Roy Keane):
After Chelsea’s match against Manchester United, Roy Keane questioned why Ronaldo was left on the bench and fellow pundit Jamie Carragher said it shouldn’t be a ‘big story’.
Carragher said on Sky Sports after the game, “Ronaldo’s not the player he was, he still obviously delivering in terms of goals. But it shouldn’t be this big story Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t start every game or at times comes off.”

In response, Keane said: “Not every game Jamie but this is Chelsea, this is a big game for Manchester United… he’s played 800 games in his career. You’re still thinking if you want the ball to fall to anybody in world football, even at 36, it’s Ronaldo, it’s not like he has come back to the club and not scored and you go ‘he can’t get up to speed, he looks awful, he’s not up to speed’. He’s on it. He looks interested.”
“And this idea that he then gets the blame for the high press…”
Jamie Carragher then stated that, “He doesn’t press, does he?”
Roy Keane: “He’s not pressed for four, five, six years! I said when he came back that he wasn’t going to fix Manchester United’s problems. But you do not bring Ronaldo back to Man Utd to sit on the bench. “Of course he is not going to start every game. But it’s Chelsea away where it is counter-attack and you might get one or two balls into the box, and you want to drop Cristiano Ronaldo?”
