As per reports, Team India have added Suryakumar Yadav to their ranks for the First Test. With captain Virat Kohli resting for the first test, Surya adds depth to the squad, which presently has Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill battling for the No.4 spot. The Mumbai batsman has been a prolific run-scorer for Mumbai in the IPL and in the domestic circuit, with his dynamic batting earning him plaudits with new head coach Rahul Dravid also said to be an admirer.
Suryakumar Yadav made his debut for India in the T20Is earlier this year, while an ODI debut followed later under Dravid’s leadership in Sri Lanka. He is yet to play a game for India in the longest format but was called up as cover during the team’s tour of England before the T20 World Cup.

As per reports, the selectors have been keen on an aggressive middle-order batsman for the Test team, and Yadav clearly fulfils that criteria as Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane and Hanuma Vihari all fit in as “defensive” players. Yadav would hope that the call up is followed by a test debut, but will face competition from Shreyas Iyer, who is also in line to make his bow in the longest format of the game.
