Washington Sundar back in training? Sundar according to the sources is yet to fully recover from his finger injury which he sustained in July this year during a practice game against Select County XI. Since then, he has missed out on the IPL 2021 Phase 2 and was out of the reckoning for the T20 World Cup. He has also missed the bus for the New Zealand series and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy due to the injury.

“The selectors are hoping that he’d be fit for the first Test in South Africa, which kicks off on December 17 in Johannesburg. He’s a crucial cog in the wheel, especially as he bats so well and adds strength to the lower order. The team missed him badly in the T20 World Cup,” a BCCI source told TOI.

While he didn’t bat or bowl, he took some throwdowns to continue his rehabilitation. He was training and rehabilitating at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru but is yet to regain full fitness. In Mumbai, he is training alongside Test specialists Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ishant Sharma and Hanuma Vihari.

With Washington Sundar out of action, Team India named off-spinner Jayant Yadav for the Test squad for the New Zealand series. India A will leave for South Africa for three four-day matches. It will also see the return of Prithvi Shaw, Navdeep Saini and Hanuma Vihari.

As for Washington Sundar, he has featured in 4 Tests for India so far. He played a crucial role in the historic Brisbane Test, helping India win the Test series 2-1. This camp comes as a great opportunity for Sundar to claw his way back into the Indian Test team.
