Shivani Pawar has had a memorable campaign at the U23 Wrestling World Championships, as she fought through the qualifiers to reach the summit clash on Day 3. Pawar confirmed India’s first medal at the tournament in Belgrade, Serbia with her stunning display. She will now face off against Emily King Shilson of the USA on Thursday and will be aiming to pull off some fireworks.
Pawar had a tough draw but manage to power through, beating current U23 European champion Mariia Tiumerekova in the semi-finals. Earlier, she had defeated U23 European silver medallist Anastasiya Yanotava. Should she clinch, she will become the first to win the gold at the U23 World Championships.

Meanwhile, Anju lost her semi-final clash on Wednesday, going down to Viktoriia Vaulina in the 55kg category. The Russian clinched a win by virtue of points, winning 3-1. Vaulina claimed a 2-0 advantage in the first round, and despite Anju’s brilliant comeback, she couldn’t trump the odds and seal the win. The Indian grappler will now face Canada’s Virginie Kaze Gascon.
Bipasha made it to the main draw after coming through the qualification round unscathed. However, her tournament ended following a defeat at the hands of Aiperi Medet Kyzy of Kyrgyzstan, who reached the final. Bipasha will now compete for repechage and hope to clinch bronze medal and add to India’s tally. Pushpa (59kg) and Monika (68kg), the other Indian wrestlers in action, could not go past the qualification round.
