Team India net bowlers Karn Sharma, Shahbaz Ahmed, Krishnappa Gowtham and Venkatesh Iyer have been sent back to India to participate for their respective state teams in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Only four fast bowlers have been asked to stay back with IPL 2021 purple cap winner Harshal Patel, Avesh Khan, SRH speedster Umran Malik and left-arm pacer Lukman Meriwala.

A BCCI official told PTI, “There won’t be too many net sessions once the tournament starts. The National selectors feel that all the spinners especially would benefit if they go back and play Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for their respective states. They need match practice. Also in this heat with optional practice, we won’t need so many spinners.”

With the likes of Rahul Chahar, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Varun Chakravarthy and Axar Patel in the squad, Team India have a stocked spin department and with optional practices going forward, there wouldn’t be a need for Nadeem, Shahbaz Ahmed and Krishnappa Gowtham. Venkatesh Iyer was drafted as cover for Hardik Pandya, but with Shardul Thakur drafted into the main squad, the KKR all-rounder was also allowed to take part in the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy.
