1. Ruturaj Gaikwad
Ruturaj Gaikwad was an uncapped player when IPL 2021 kicked off in April, but by the time the tournament ended, he had already had his India cap. However, despite the being the Orange Cap winner for the season, the competition for places in the Indian team meant that Gaikwad wasn’t considered for selection, not even as a standby player for the T20 World Cup. The 24-year-old however has time on his side and should expect more opportunities to come away in the future.
2. Faf du Plessis
While Gaikwad is just starting out, his opening partner Faf du Plessis on the other end of the spectrum as far his career is concerned. At 37, Du Plessis is milking the very last drops of his batting career, and finished just two runs behind Gaikwad in the Orange Cap race, having finished as the second-highest run-getter in the CPL 2021 as well. Despite being in rich form, the veteran was ignored by the South African selectors for the T20 World Cup, despite making himself available to play the limited formats of the game. It’s only a matter of time before the CSK opener hangs his boots, and the disappointment of not playing the 2021 T20 World Cup, despite being in the best of form will sting the ex-South African captain.

3. Harshal Patel
Such has been the season, that IPL 2021’s Orange and Purple Cap winners both won’t be making the trip to the T20 World Cup. Harshal Patel enjoyed a record-breaking season equalling Dwayne Bravo’s record of 32 wickets in a season to seal the Purple Cap. He was mightily impressive at the death, foxing batsmen with his variations to help RCB reach the playoffs. Harshal Patel did win the MVP award, but it was not enough to make his way through the Indian team.

4. Yuzvendra Chahal
Yuzvendra Chahal was perhaps one of the most surprising exclusions despite having a stellar IPL 2021. Chahal lost his place to fellow spinners Rahul Chahar, Ravichandran Ashwin and Varun Chakravarthy, but ended up bagging more wickets and than either of them when the season ended. The RCB leggie wasn’t considered despite the Indian team having an extended deadline to submit the squad.
5. Sunil Narine
Sunil Narine returned to his very best and was one of the biggest contributors to KKR’s run to the IPL 2021 final. The mystery spinner has also chipped in handily with the bat proving to be a valuable pinch hitter for the franchise. However, Narine was omitted from the West Indian squad on fitness grounds initially, and Kieron Pollard confirmed that the all-rounder won’t be making the team despite his good performances.
