The Ashes – England tour of Australia, Stuart Broad makes a huge claim – England’s legendary fast bowler Stuart Broad says that it wouldn’t be a surprise if any of his teammates opted out of the Ashes Down Under, despite the full squad giving their approval to travel next month. England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) named their 17-man squad for the Ashes earlier this month, after weeks of talks with Cricket Australia and the players following concerns on living conditions and quarantine arrangements. Broad said that while there was an agreement, things could change once the players land in Australia.
The Ashes: Stuart Broad warns, ‘won’t be surprised if still few England players pull out of the Ashes
The ECB selected a 17-man squad for the Ashes tour, after having given conditional approval to Cricket Australia’s plans for their 111-week stay in the country. While agreements have been met, there remains a potential complication of rules and regulations being altered by individual states after the players have arrived in the country.
Ahead of the series, Stuart Broad, as quoted by Daily Mail, said, “It wouldn’t surprise me at all if players pull out while we are there. We have seen that on Ashes tours before and for me it has always been more likely that players will pull out if things change in Australia while we are there rather than before we go.”

Former England stars Marcus Trescothick and Jonathan Trott both quit while on away Ashes trips due to mental health issues and the England Cricket Board (ECB) are mindful of the effects of being asked to spend 14 days quarantining and return to bubble life will have on current players. England will hope to avoid any further absentees, having already lost some of their key stars to injury.
Jofra Archer, Sam Curran and Ben Stoke shave been ruled out, while Moeen Ali recently announced his retirement from the longest format of the game. Broad himself is returning from injury, having hurt himself in the first Test against India, before subsequently missing the rest of the series.
England squad for the Ashes: Joe Root (Captain), James Anderson, Jonathan Bairstow, Dom Bess, Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler, Zak Crawley, Haseeb Hameed, Dan Lawrence, Jack Leach, Dawid Malan, Craig Overton, Ollie Pope, Ollie Robinson, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood
