Dhoni leading from the front
Last year CSK finished 7th and failed to make it to the playoffs for the only instance in IPL. Back then Dhoni declared, ‘’We will comeback stronger. That’s what we are known for.’’ 10 months later we have CSK as IPL 2021 champions.
Dhoni’s charm with captaincy didn’t seem to end in IPL 2021. Even though Dhoni failed to contribute big with the bat, he got the best out of his players. And, When it mattered the most for CSK, he walked ahead of R Jadeja in Qualifier 1 against DC to prove who is the BOSS by finishing it off in style. The 40-year-old turned back the clock to score 6-ball 18 and guided CSK to the 9th IPL Final.
Retaining the core & backing players
Not everyone can settle in a team soon and that’s why CSK maintained the same core of the team over 12 seasons even after failures. In every auction, CSK added players to plug the holes and the formula has succeeded remarkably. Despite MS Dhoni’s off-form and Dwayne Bravo’s growing age, CSK went against the tide and retained them and the result is there for everyone to see. Another big example is Ruturaj Gaikwad. The youngster had a string of poor scores in the first few matches but instead of dropping Gaikwad, they continued to back him. He repaid the faith by winning Orange Cap with 635 runs.
Top-order & bowling department fired
CSK openers Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad ended as top run-getters with 635 and 633 runs in IPL 2021 seasons. Their excellent show made up for the middle-order wobbles. The duo provided solid performance for CSK throughout the season. Robin Uthappa stepped up in IPL 2021 Qualifier 1 and Final after Suresh Raina’s multiple failures. The bowling department featuring the likes of Shardul Thakur, Josh Hazlewood and all-rounders Moeen Ali, R Jadeja continued to weave magic.
