T20 World Cup Playing Conditions: DRS introduced for the first time – Decision Review System (DRS) will be used for the first time at the upcoming T20 World Cup 2021 in a major change in the playing conditions for the tournament. DRS have never been used in previous editions of the men’s tournament, but teams will now have the option of taking two reviews during each innings. Incidentally, DRS has been used in the women’s edition of the tournament, both in 2018 and the 2020 T20 World Cup.

As per the T20 World Cup playing conditions released by ICC this week, teams will have the chance to review an umpire’s decision twice per innings. Previously teams were only allowed a single referral before ICC had confirmed in June last year an additional unsuccessful DRS review for each team in each innings of a match across all formats, “keeping in mind that there may be less experienced umpires on duty at times” owing to Covid-19-related reasons. Each team has two reviews per innings in white-ball games, while the three DRS referrals are available in Test matches.

T20 World Cup playing conditions: DRS was not in place for T20Is when the last edition of the T20 World Cup was played in India in 2016. However, the rules were amended and the subsequent editions of the women’s T20 World Cup saw the implementation of the system. The 2021 tournament is the first men’s T20 World in five years and hence DRS will be making its debut. DRS is at the discretion of the participating boards for bilateral series in both men’s and women’s internationals, but ICC have adopted it since 2017 in major ICC events such as the men’s Champions Trophy, the 50-over World Cup, and the World Test Championship as well as the women’s ODI and T20 World Cups.

In another change, ICC have decided to increase the minimum number of overs for delayed and rain-interrupted matches. While teams will need to bat a minimum of five overs in group stages for a result to be declared, the knockout games will require a minimum of 10 overs to effect a result, as was the norm in the women’s T20 World Cup last year.
