The Proteas skipper suffered the thumb injury (fracture) during the second innings of the first ODI when South African batsmen were chasing 301 runs put by Sri Lanka on the board.

SL vs SA LIVE – Temba Bavuma ruled out: The unwanted incident happened in the 26th over where while trying to block the throw which was coming straight to Bavuma, he hit himself on the hand. The injury was was intense that he was flinging in pain and had to call the physio who used Icepack to give the immediate respite.
Soon, in the 28th over during the drinks, the right-handed batsman retired hurt himself on 38 runs and saw Rassie van der Dussen walking to the crease.
Bavuma even didn’t feature in the post-match presentation after South Africa lost the opening match by 14 runs as he had gone for the scans.
