India tour of England: Prithvi Shaw, Suryakumar Yadav, Jayant Yadav likely to join Virat Kohli’s Team India in England – With injuries piling up in England, Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri’s team management has requested for Prithvi Shaw, Suryakumar Yadav and Jayant Yadav. They will replace opener Shubman Gill, all-rounder Washington Sundar and Avesh Khan in the squad.
Ever since Shubman Gill was ruled out due to a stress fracture on left shin, Prithvi Shaw’s name has been doing rounds with the team management in the UK requesting the Chetan Sharma-led Selection Committee to send Prithvi Shaw to England. However, with the Sri Lanka series ongoing and UK’s quarantine rules, selectors did not pay heed. But with Washington Sundar also ruled out due to a finger injury, Prithvi Shaw, Jayant Yadav and Suryakumar Yadav are all set to join the team in England as per an Indian Express report.
India tour of England: While Shubman Gill has returned to India due to a shin injury, Washington Sundar and Avesh Khan will return home shortly. Both sustained finger injuries during the practice match against Select County XI in Durham.
Prithvi Shaw and Suryakumar Yadav are currently in Sri Lanka for the limited-overs series. Both are in red-hot form and could be of benefit during the 5-match Test series. The opening Test will kick start on August 4 at Trent Bridge.
Suryakumar Yadav is seen as a backup for Ajinkya Rahane as the latter is dealing with a hamstring problem. However, with the confidence team management has shown in the Mumbai batsman, he could be considered in place of Cheteshwar Pujara, who is struggling with his form. But there will be no direct replacement for Avesh Khan as there are plenty of pace bowlers in the India squad.
Jayant Yadav is seen as a like-to-like replacement for Washington Sundar. But with Ravindra Jadeja in the squad fulfilling the all-rounder’s job, he will be a cover in case of any injuries. Off-spinner Jayant Yadav is in India. He had last played for India against Australia in a Test match in Pune in 2017.
Earlier, BCCI and the selectors had turned down Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri led Team Management’s request for Prithvi Shaw. The BCCI and selectors believed with Mayank Agarwal and Abhimanyu Easwaran already with the team, there was no need to send Prithvi Shaw. But further injuries have complicated the matter. As per Indian Express, the board has changed its mind and the requested players will be sent to England. BCCI is currently making plans to fly them to England after the Sri Lanka series ends on July 29.
