India at Tokyo Olympics: Why Covid-19 cases in South Africa camp are also a big concern for the Indian team in Tokyo?

India at Tokyo Olympics – Covid-19 in South Africa camp – Big concern for India? The Tokyo Olympic Games organizing committee said Monday it has identified 21 people as close contacts of South African footballer and all of them are being quarantined. The three — players Thabiso Monyane and Kamohelo Mahlatsi, as well as a video analyst — are the first confirmed cases among Olympic teams at the village in Tokyo’s waterfront area.
According to the organizers, all of the close contacts are also part of the South African soccer team. With most believed to be players rather than staff, the situation raises concerns about the impact on the opening game and the rest of the tournament.

The infected players, along with potential close contacts, have been isolating in their rooms and have not taken part in practice.

Why these cases are big concern for India?

The reason why it is a concern for the Indian athletes is that India is also staying in the same tower NO. 15 as the South African squad. Indian athletes are staying on floor No. 11, 12 & 13th and according to the information available South Africa are on floor 4 & 5.

Not only India but Athletes from Denmark, Belgium & Norway are also concerned. All of them are housed in the same tower.

On their part the Organizers are raising fears of a cluster just days before the opening ceremony. “They have been tested on arrival, daily at the Olympic Village and complied with all the mandatory measures,” a statement said. South Africa’s rugby sevens coach Neil Powell also tested positive and is in isolation in the Japanese town where the squad are training.

“The timing of the positive results suggests that the PCR test in these individuals was done during the incubation period of the infection, which is how they could be negative in South Africa and then positive in Japan,” said chief medical officer Phatho Zondi.

Fifty-five cases linked to the Games have been discovered this month, including four athletes.

Competitors are flying in from around the world for the pandemic-delayed Olympics, which are facing a backlash in Japan due to the risk of fresh Covid outbreaks. The Olympic Village, a complex of apartments and dining areas in Tokyo, will house 6,700 athletes and officials at its peak when the Games get underway.
