India at Tokyo Olympics – Indian Shooters at Olympics: Can fifteen shooters bring more medals for India this time?

At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, India will be sending a record number of fifteen shooters to compete across ten events. This shooting team is one of the best consisting of some former world number one and current World number one shooters. Recently, India finished top of the ISSF World cup tally with 32 medals and they are expected to perform well at the Olympics. Let’s look at the members of the Indian shooting squad .

India at Tokyo Olympics – Indian Shooters Tokyo Olympics

Angad Vir Singh Bajwa

Angad Vir Singh Bajwa will be representing India in the men’s skeet event. He holds the world record in skeet finals with a score of 60 out of 60. By winning a gold medal in the 2019 Doha Asian Shooting Championship, he earned himself a quota for Tokyo Olympics 2020.

Mairaj Ahmed Khan

Mairaj Ahmed Khan will be representing India in the men’s skeet event. He is the first Indian shooter to represent India in the skeet event during the 2016 Rio Olympics. One of his notable performances is a silver medal finish at the ISSF World cup, Rio, Brazil. The 45-years-old shooter will be making his second Olympic appearance this time.

Saurabh Chaudhary

Saurabh Chaudhary will be representing India in two events, men’s 10m air pistol and 10m air pistol mixed team. He became the youngest gold medallist at the Asian Games when he won the gold medal in the 2018 Asian games. In the 2021 World cup in Delhi, he won medals in all the three categories he competed in, two gold in the team event and a silver in the individual event. The mixed team pair of Saurabh Chaudhry & Manu Bhaker is expected to win a medal for India.

Abhishek Verma

Abhishek Verma will be representing India in two events, men’s 10m air pistol and 10m air pistol mixed team. He is the reigning World number one in this event and is one of India’s biggest hopes at this Olympics. The 31-years-old shooter has six world cup medals to his name and a bronze medal that he won at the 2018 Asian games. He will be pairing up with Yashaswini Deswal in the mixed event.

Deepak Kumar

Deepak Kumar will be representing India in two events, men’s 10m air rifle and 10m air rifle mixed team event. The 32-years-old shooter won a bronze medal in the 10m men’s air rifle event at the 14th Asian Shooting Championships held in Doha, Qatar, which sealed an Olympic quota for India in this event. His notable performances are the silver medal in the 2018 Asian Games and the bronze medal in the mixed team event at the 2018 ISSF World cup.

Divyansh Singh Panwar

Divyansh Singh Panwar will be representing India in two events, men’s 10m air rifle and 10m air rifle mixed team event. The 22-year-old shooter won the silver medal in the 10m meter air rifle event at the 2019 ISSF World cup in Beijing and secured a quota position for India at the Tokyo Olympics. The mixed team of him and Elavenil Valarivan won the gold medal in the 10m air rifle mixed team event at the 2021 ISSF World cup held in New Delhi.

Sanjeev Rajput

Sanjeev Rajput will be representing India in the 50m air rifle three positions event. The 40-years-old shooter is very experienced, and this will be his third Olympics appearance. He won the silver medal in the 50m air rifle three positions at the 2019 ISSF World cup held in Rio de Janeiro and secured a quota for India at the Tokyo Olympics.

Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar

Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar will be representing India in the 50m air rifle three positions event. He won a bronze medal in the 50m rifle three positions event at the 2019 Asian Shooting Championships and secured a quota place for India at the Tokyo Olympics. Recently, he also won the gold medal in the 50m rifle three positions at the 2021 ISSF World cup held in New Delhi.

Manu Bhaker

Manu Bhaker will be representing India in three events, women’s 10m air pistol, 25m pistol, and 10m air pistol mixed team. She won two gold medals at the 2018 ISSF World cup and became the youngest Indian to win a gold medal at the ISSF World cup. She has a great run by winning the silver medal in the 10m air pistol mixed team events and the bronze medal in the 10m air pistol women’s team event at the 2021 ISSF World cup in Osijek last month.

Yashaswini Deswal

Yashaswini Deswal will be representing India in two events, women’s 10m air pistol and 10m air pistol mixed team. She won the gold medal in the 10m air pistol event at the 2019 ISSF World cup in Rio de Janeiro and secured a quota for India at the Tokyo Olympics. The 24-years-old performed brilliantly in last month’s ISSF World cup held in Croatia by winning the bronze medal in both 10m air pistol team and 10m air pistol mixed team event.

Rahi Sarnobat

Rahi Sarnobat will be representing India in the 25m pistol event. She won a gold medal in the 2018 Asian games, and she became the first Indian woman shooter to win a gold in the Asian Games history. By winning gold medal in the 25m pistol event at the 2021 ISSF World cup in Croatia last month, the shooter is the one to look for in this Olympics.

Apurvi Chandela

Apurvi Chandela will be representing India in the 10m air rifle event. By winning the gold medal at the 2019 ISSF World cup, she secured a quota to participate in the Tokyo Olympics. After competing at the 2016 Rio Olympics, this will be her second Olympic appearance.

Elavenil Valarivan

Elavenil Valarivan will be representing India in two events, women’s 10m air rifle and 10m air rifle mixed team event. She is currently ranked number one in the Tokyo Olympics ranking and is ranked number 12 in the world according to 2021 rankings. The 21-years-old is the only shooter in the Indian contingent who has got the Olympic slot without winning a quota. The young shooter was reward by the federation for her consistent performance.

Anjum Moudgil

Anjum Moudgil will be representing India in two events, 50m rifle three position and 10m air rifle mixed team. Some of her notable performances are two silver medals in the 2018 world championships, one in 10m air rifle and another one in 10m team air rifle. She is currently ranked World number 2 in women’s 10m air rifle ISSF ranking and will be heading to her debut Olympics at Tokyo.
Tejaswini Sawant
Tejaswini Sawant will be representing India in the 50m rifle three positions event. At the age of 41, she will be the oldest Indian shooter debutant and also oldest in the current squad. The shooter made her international debut way back in 2004 and surprisingly has never got a chance to represent India at Olympics. Her best performance came in the 2018 commonwealth games when she won a gold medal in the same category.

India at Tokyo Olympics – Indian Shooting History at Olympics: Let’s have a look at all the four medals won by Indian shooters

It all started in the 2004 Athens Olympics when Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore won a silver medal in the double trap shooting. Soon, in the next Olympics, Abhinav Bindra won India’s first individual Olympic gold medal in the 10m air rifle event. In the 2012 Olympics, India had two medals from shooting, with Vijay Kumar and Gagang Narang winning silver and bronze in their respective events.

2004 Olympics

Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore won a silver medal in the double trap shooting event at the 2004 Athens Olympics and became Independent India’s first individual silver medallist.

2008 Olympics

Abhinav Bindra won India’s first-ever individual gold medal at the Olympics. He achieved the feat by winning gold in the 10m air rifle event with a score of 700.5.

2012 Olympics

Two shooters won medals in this Olympics. First, Vijay Kumar won silver in the 25m rapid-fire event and followed by Gagang Narang winning a bronze medal in the 10m air rifle event.
