Cricket South Africa – Covid-19 hits CSA: CSA reports Rs 131.6 crore loss in FY 2020-21 due to COVID-19 pandemic, appoints new majority independent board- Cricket South Africa (CSA) has reported a loss of Rand 250 million (Rs 131.6 crore) in the 2020-21 financial year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and tour cancellations, reported ESPNCricinfo. While England left South Africa without playing the ODI series after the conclusion of the T20 series due to a breach in a bio-secure bubble, Australia also off called the two-Test match series in March. CSA was also hopeful of hosting a three-match T20I series against India in August, which did not occur.
The series against India is likely to take place in India in September ahead of the T20 World Cup but it is subject to IPL 2021 Phase 2 schedule. At the same time, CSA is hopeful of a packed schedule for summer which might witness India visit the country for three-match Test series.

Cricket South Africa – Covid-19 hits CSA: Meanwhile, CSA is moving towards a new independent board to bring an end to the tenure of the Sports Ministry appointed interim board. The new board will comprise seven independent directors and five non-independents. A final chair is yet to be confirmed. The new structure will diminish the representation and power of the members council that was in place under a 14-member body for almost a decade.
The 14-member board will serve till September when CSA is due to hold its AGM. CSA President and VP, who will not sit on the new board, were chosen from the members’ council. Acting President of council Rihan Richards was elected as the president while Denovan May as his deputy.
CSA can look now forward to a more stable period of governance with a new board.
“It is highly appropriate that we have reached this historic moment in the transformation of our governance model as we prepared to celebrate the 30th birthday of Cricket South Africa (CSA) or the United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCBSA) as it was originally known in just over two weeks’ time,” said outgoing interim board chair Stavros Nicolaou as quoted by ESPNCricinfo.
“Our new Memorandum of Incorporation is a document we can all embrace with pride as it puts us in a position to execute the best governance practices that will make CSA able to stand comparison with any other sporting organisation around the globe. It is a world-class document,” he added.
One of the challenging tasks of the new board will be to oversee the conclusion of former acting CEO Kugandrie Govender’s disciplinary proceeding and appoint a permanent. CSA does not have a permanent CEO since December 2019.
