The Delhi Capitals have announced Axar Patel as their new captain for the IPL 2025 season. He takes over from Rishabh Pant, who was released by the franchise before the mega auction in November last year. Pant subsequently joined the Lucknow Super Giants, becoming the most expensive player in IPL history with a record-breaking Rs 27 crore bid. In this article, we will take a look at Axar Patel’s captaincy record and stats.
Axar Patel captaincy record
Axar has captained Gujarat in 17 T20 matches from 2018 to 2024, and won 10 of them. He also led the Capitals once back on May 12, 2024 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. DC lost the match by 47 runs.
As the T20 captain, Axar Patel has amassed 364 runs, averaging 36.40, with his highest score of 57 against RCB last year. On the bowling front, he has taken 13 wickets, averaging 29.07, with his best figures being 4-0-13-2 against Baroda in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021.
The Capitals were runners-up in 2020 when the tournament was held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), having been relocated from India due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, they failed to make it to the playoffs for three consecutive seasons, in 2022, 2023, and 2024.
The Capitals will kick off their campaign against the Super Giants on Monday, March 24, at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam.
