Australia cricket team’s Steve Smith might have called it a day in ODIs following the side’s Champions Trophy exit but not before he levelled scores with Virat Kohli. The stand-in Australian skipper, equalled the ex-Indian skipper’s record of most fifty-plus knocks scored in the knockout stages of an ICC ODI event. Smith has 35 half-centuries to his name in the limited-overs format of the game.
Smith on par with Kohli as he retires from ODIs
Both Smith and Kohli have five fifty-plus scores to their names in knockout matches at ICC ODI events. They are just one behind Sachin Tendulkar, who has 6 50+ scores in ICC events. Smith’s last half-century in ODIs came in his very last game for Australia in the Champions Trophy 2025, where he top-scored for the side with a 73-run knock. “God of cricket” Tendulkar leads the list of most 50+ scores by a batter in ICC ODI knockouts with 6 fifty-plus scores to his name.

Smith, who made his debut in ODIs in 2010, went on to amass 5800 runs from 170 ODIs, averaging 43.28. He came in as the stand-in skipper for Australia in the absence of Pat Cummins in Champions Trophy 2025. However, Smith has decided to call it a day after managing to lead Australia to just one victory in CT 2025. With 12 fifties and 35 hundreds to his name, Smith was undoubtedly one of Australia’s best batters in the 50-over format. He scored the most against India in ODIs, amassing 1383 runs from 30 ODIs, averaging 53.19.
