Virat Kohli has hit one of his all-time lows. Well, his Test legacy has hampered massively in the last few years but he never slipped to below 25 in Tests lately. But now, he is moved to 27th position in the latest ICC Men’s Test batting rankings. Virat Kohli, who once ruled all the batting charts irrespective of the format, has maintained a sluggish form that was seen at the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) as well. India were in the series for a major part but Kohli wasn’t one of those reasons. He made just 190 runs at an average of 23.75, which is now below his ICC Test ranking as well.
Virat Kohli not among top 3 Indian Test batters
Virat Kohli was an easy target for the Aussie bowlers at the recently concluded BGT. He started the tour with a great hundred at Perth but that was it. In the next eight innings of his, Kohli accumulated just 90 more runs, getting caught behind on each and every occasion. Pacers pitched it outside off stump and Kohli edged them. On what was supposed to be his last trip Down Under, Kohli failed miserably. Scott Boland, who has jumped 29 places to be at ninth spot, claimed Kohli’s wicket four times in the series.
Kohli’s poor form continued in Sydney, scoring 17 and 6, leading to a further decline in his rankings. He has now slipped to 27th in the world, his lowest ranking since December 2012, when he was still a newcomer to Test cricket. This marks the first time in over a decade that Kohli has fallen outside the top 25 Test batters. Among Indians, Kohli ranks fourth, with Yashasvi Jaiswal (4), Rishabh Pant (9) and Shubman Gill (23) also above the former Indian captain.
Rohit Sharma slips to 42
Kohli was not the only Indian veteran who had a horrible BGT 2024/25. Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s stocks stooped so low that he was forced to drop himself from the fifth Sydney Test. He has now slipped to 42nd in the latest ICC Test men’s batting ranking, his worst since 2018—a period when he wasn’t even a regular in the Test side. With just 164 runs at an average of 10.93 since September 2024, Rohit has skid from 6th spot to an alarming 42!
