WTC final scenario: What will happen if India loses the MCG Test vs Australia?

Last day left of the MCG Test between IND vs AUS, game could potentially end in a draw. But what will happen if India loses? See how much it could hamper their WTC final chances.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy 4th Test is now standing at an interesting position. Initially, on Day 3, we witnessed how India fought back to get back into the game, thanks to a big partnership between Nitesh Reddy and Washington Sundar. Earlier, on Day 2, it was Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal’s three-figure partnership that all helped India reach 369 in response to Australia’s 474. In the second innings, at one point, it looked like Australia would get bundled out with a lead of around 250, which India could chase down fairly easily. But now, things look extremely interesting as the last day coming of boxing day Test. Currently, Australia has a 333-run lead with one wicket left.

We saw how Bumrah did all the hard work on Day 4, but in the end, that last wicket didn’t come for India, and Scott Boland and Nathan Lyon batted well. Now, it’s Day 5 coming people are wondering what could happen if the India vs Australia Test result comes in a latter-favor.

As far as a draw is concerned, if that happens, both teams’ percentages will dip in the WTC table. However, if India wins, they will strengthen their position for the WTC final. But what happens if they lose the Test match against Australia? Let’s take a look at the scenario and see how it will affect India’s chances for the WTC final if they lose the MCG Test.

What will happen if India lose MCG Test

Currently sitting at third spot in the WTC points table, if we assume India loses the MCG Test, chances are they will remain in third place. However, their points will see some reduction as it will go down from 55.88 to 52.78, but they will not be completely out of the WTC final contention. It will then be Sri Lanka who could play a crucial role in helping India, as Australia is scheduled to play Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka. If India needs a boost, Sri Lanka must defeat Australia in their two-match series.

Can India qualify for WTC Final if they lose MCG Test?

As mentioned, India’s chances will not be fully jeopardized if they lose the MCG Test. There are still opportunities for them to qualify for the WTC final, and the final SCG Test will be crucial. If India wins that match, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy scoreline will end at 2-2, and India’s percentage will go to 55.26%. However, since India has limited matches remaining in this current WTC cycle, the outcome will largely depend on Sri Lanka’s performance. If Sri Lanka can defeat Australia, India could still have a chance to meet South Africa at Lord’s for the WTC final.
