The 21-year-old capitalised on the width, executing a brilliant drive over the off side to bring up his maiden Test fifty. This is Nitish Kumar Reddy’s maiden Test fifty in the six innings he has played so far. After scoring the fifty, he celebrated with the signature action from the famous Telugu movie Pushpa.
Clutching at crucial point
Nitish Kumar Reddy came to bat after Rishabh Pant’s dismissal when India was struggling at 191/6. He played a steady knock initially alongside Ravindra Jadeja, who was dismissed at 221/7. Later, Nitish Kumar Reddy formed a crucial partnership with Washington Sundar, gradually steering the innings forward and preventing India from facing a follow-on. At the time of writing, he is the second-highest scorer in this innings after Yashasvi Jaiswal, who made 82 runs while opening and was eventually run out on the second day.
Debut in Australia
Nitish Kumar Reddy made his debut for India against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024. In his first match against Australia, he scored 41 and an unbeaten 38. However, today in Melbourne, he achieved a significant milestone by scoring his first-ever fifty for India in Test cricket.
Early career and achievements
The 21-year-old first gained attention during the 2017-18 Vijay Hazare Trophy with a triple century for Andhra Pradesh. In first-class cricket, he has played 26 matches, scoring 958 runs, with one century and two fifties to his name.
