So, India’s domestic 50-over tournament, the Vijay Hazare Trophy is on, and all the players who are on the verge of making it to India’s ODI squad, are participating. But not veteran batter Sanju Samson — after he was not picked in Kerala squad, for not attending the practice camp with the team. While it might not be as big a loss for Kerala, it could certainly be a big one for Team India, who could soon be announcing their squad for Champions Trophy 2025 — and Sanju could have been a contender.
NO Sanju Samson in Champions Trophy 2025?
In fact, as per various reports, the reason he didn’t attend the preparatory camp was, he is nursing a leg injury. So, that in short, end his hopes of making it to the Champions Trophy 2025 squad. But had he been in the mix, been part of the squad, or even travelling reserves — it could have been a big plus for the team.
His record in ODIs is just exceptional — In 16 matches, he has scored 510 runs with a highest of 108, and has a ton and three fifties to his name. More than that, he averages an astounding 56 in these innings. Now, having said that, Sanju Samson’s loss might be someone else’s gain.
Shreyas Iyer Likely to Make Cut
In the fray is also Shreyas Iyer, who has been out of the team for a while now, despite scoring truck loads of runs in domestic circuit. In the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the Mumbai player went on to score 345 runs in 9 matches at an average of 49. In the Vijay Hazare Trophy as well, he has scored a ton already in two matches — scored 158 runs, and has not been dismissed till now. So, he would be one contender for sure.
Another batsman who could be in the scheme of things, could be India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, who is currently playing in the IND vs AUS series in Australia, and had struck a wonderful ton in the 1st Test in Perth.
