Tanush Kotian saves day for Mumbai, after Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer bat as tail-enders in VHT

Tanush Kotian was impressive in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, after earning maiden India call-up for the IND vs AUS series.

Domestic competitions don’t really seem like a level playing field with Team Mumbai in the fray. Despite messing up big time, they somehow find ways to win, and Monday’s Vijay Hazare Trophy match vs Hyderabad at Ahmedabad, was one such instance. While chasing a paltry 170 for win, Mumbai decided to reverse their batting order, with Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer and Shivam Dube slated to bat at No. 8, No. 9, and No. 10.

On the other hand, their top 7 was — Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Ayush Mhatre, Hardik Tamore, Suryansh Shedge, Atharva Ankolekar, Shardul Thakur and Tanush Kotian. And the struggle was instantly visible after Mumbai’s near-fatal move. At one stage they were reduced to 67/6. From there on, new India recruit for the IND vs AUS series, Tanush Kotian (39) and Suryakumar Yadav (18), strung a small partnership. That was followed by a cameo from Shreyas — who scored 44 from 20 deliveries only to take Mumbai home.

Earlier in the day, Hyderabad batted poorly to only score 169 all out. Opener Tanmay Agarwal scored 64 from 74, while Aravelly Avinash scored 52, otherwise all others failed remarkably. Notably, Tilak Varma, who was in fine nick in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, was dispatched for a duck. Left-arm spinner Atharva Ankolekar was the pick of the bowlers for Mumbai, and picked up 4/55. Tanush Kotian returned with figures of 2/38 in an all-round performance for his side.

Brief scores: Hyderbad 169 in 38.1 overs (Tanmay Agarwal 64, A Avanish 52; Atharva Ankolekar 4/55, Ayush Mhatre 3/17) lost to Mumbai 175/7 in 25.1 overs (Shreyas Iyer 44 no, Tanush Kotian 39 no; Sharanu Nishanth 3/42).
