No place for Ben Stokes, Joe Root returns as England announce squad for ICC Champions Trophy

England are expected to face South Africa, Australia and Afghanistan in the Group B of the ICC Champions Trophy.

The England cricket team has already announced the squad for the ICC Champions Trophy, which kicks off on February 19, 2025, and the India tour, which commences on January 22, 2025. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has named a 15-man squad sans their Test captain Ben Stokes. The all-rounder had suffered a hamstring injury during the New Zealand Test series and hasn’t been included.

‘Injured’ Stokes out, Joe Root returns

Stokes had previously said that he probably won’t feature in the 8-team tournament, but if Brendon McCullum, who’ll take charge as England’s all-format coach in January, asks him to play in the ICC Champions Trophy, he’ll be ready to do so. While it may still happen, right now Stokes’ participation seems unlikely.

Joe Root, who last played an ODI match in November 2023, returns to the side. The modern great wasn’t part of the recent ODI series against England, and back then, captain Jos Buttler had expressed uncertainty over Root’s participation. Luckily for England, Root is back.

Young guns Jacob Bethell and Jamie Smith have also been selected. Jofra Archer, who featured in the ODI series against West Indies, has also been added to the squad.
