Jadeja, Sundar & form: Aakash Chopra reveals what prompted Ashwin to decide “he was done”

Ex-Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra claimed that Ashwin's retirement was triggered by the fact that the spinner knew he wasn't the no.1 choice in overseas conditions

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra claimed that Ravichandran Ashwin‘s retirement was triggered by the spinner being overlooked in overseas conditions. The Tamil Nadu spinner took the world by surprise after announcing his retirement right after the IND vs AUS 3rd Test in Melbourne. Chopra reckons that Ashwin knew that he wasn’t the number one spin option when it came to playing outside India, adding that he also knew very well that his spin twin Ravindra Jadeja would be ahead of him.

Aakash Chopra explains why Ashwin retired

What exactly has happened? There is a moment in everyone’s life, where you think, do I want to do this anymore? Am I OK with it? Ashwin must have had this in his mind for a long time that he does not play much overseas. He is not the no.1 spin option when it comes to overseas games. This was going on for quite some time. He made peace with it. Jaddu was always ahead of him overseas. So, he made peace with it that Jadeja is playing,” said Chopra on his YouTube Channel.

“But when Sundar played the Perth Test, then he said, that’s it, I am done. Ashwin played the Pink-ball Test but when he was dropped from Gabba, he said, he was done. You are not serious in playing me in the XI. I did nothing wrong in Pink-ball Test to be dropped from the Gabba game,” he added.

A career that started in 2010, Ashwin saw many ups — along with winning the 2011 World Cup, 2013 Champions Trophy, and two-time finalist of the World Test Championships. It must be admitted that R Ashwin proved to be the most effective in Test matches, where he not only won numerous matches for India with ball, but with the bat as well.
