Last chance saloon for Rohit Sharma to perform or perish from Test cricket in IND vs AUS boxing Test

Rohit Sharma has been in poor form off late notching up just 10 runs in Gabba Test

The IND vs AUS Boxing Test in Melbourne could well be the last chance for Rohit Sharma to perform well and extend his stay on the India Cricket Team as the Test captain. Rohit Sharma is under immense pressure to perform or perish. A win in the Border Gavaskar Trophy will greatly enhance India’s chance of making it to the WTC Finals and also extend Rohit’s stint as the captain of the side in the red ball format of the game.

Rohit Sharma missed the Perth Test as he remained in India to attend the birth of his second child. In his absence, Jasprit Bumrah had effectively led the side and helped India rake up a nice win. With Rohit returning, India was handed a humiliating loss in Adelaide and rain forced a draw in Gabba.

Last Mission for Hitman?

With everything said and done, Rohit Sharma has failed to perform with the bat. His inability to score runs, coupled with poor dismissals has created enough worry for the Hitman. And then after the Gabba Test, Ashwin’s retirement too hasn’t been kind to Rohit.

With Ashwin having hung up his boots, Rohit’s place in the team is also under a scanner. If he fails to perform in Melbourne and Sydney, his stint as Test captain and player can effectively come to an end. The same can also be said about other seniors like Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja, whose red-ball career is in major doubt if India fails to reach the WTC Finals.

As things stand, India lies third behind South Africa and Australia in WTC Standings. And with juts 2 Test matches remaining, India needs to win both. India is the only team to reach the last 2 WTC Finals and can well be the first team to reach it for the third successive time. But interestingly, India has failed to win WTC Finals losing out to the Kiwis and Aussies.
