Advantage Rohit Sharma? Australia’s decision to name two vice-captains could mean no Travis Head at MCG

The mystery around Travis Head's alleged injury deepens as Australia have named two vice-captains for the last two IND vs AUS Tests

India might just get lucky in Melbourne with Travis Head uncertain for IND vs AUS 4th Test at the MCG. In the backdrop of the Australian’s alleged injury during the 3rd Test in Brisbane, Australia have announced two vice-captains for the next two games. While Head has been named vice-captain, veteran Steve Smith has also been given the same responsibility, casting aspersions on if Head is fully fit to take part in the upcoming match.

Australia name two vice-captains for IND vs AUS 4th Test

Australia made two important changes for IND vs AUS 4th Test, replacing opener Nathan McSweeney with young Sam Konstas while Sean Abott replaces an injured Josh Hazlewood. However, what was more glaring was the choice of the selectors to name two vice-captains for the remaining two Tests. While Cricket Australia did not mention any particular reason for having both Head and Smith as deputy to Pat Cummins, one can try and read between the lines to solve the mystery.

An Australian team sans Travis Head at the MCG would be a blessing for Rohit Sharma and co. The prolific batter has been quite literally a headache for India, firing in all three Tests so far. Not to forget, Head has loved haunting India, having done so in the WTC final in 2023 followed by the ODI World Cup final later that year.

On Day 5 of IND vs AUS 3rd Test at the Gabba, Head was seen limping while attempting to reach the non-strikers end. Skipper Pat Cummins had later confirmed that the explosive batter was dealing with a quad issue. However, Head had revealed that he was just feeling sore after a “big couple of weeks” and added that he would be fine soon. It looks like the mystery around his injury still continues and Australia have taken the safe route by announcing two vice-captains for the remaining games in Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
