Things have been tricky for the Indian Cricket Team in the ongoing IND vs AUS Test series. While the bowling unit has performed decently, the same can’t be said about India’s batting unit. The batting order especially India’s middle order has massively underperformed. In the remaining two matches of the Border Gavaskar Trophy, they need to fire on all cylinders if India hopes to retain the series and qualify for the WTC Finals.
Imagine the batting order consisting of Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, and Rohit Sharma, all severely underperforming. The opening pair in comparison has been far better. KL Rahul has been the standout performer with the bat. Yashasvi Jaiswal on the other hand has been a bit dull after his Perth heroics.
India’s Major cause of Concern – Poor Performing Middle Order
But India’s major cause of concern is the middle order. Time and often it has been the case that the middle order has performed well when the top order has faltered. But here in Australia, when the openers have faltered, India’s highly experienced and star middle order has failed to anchor the innings.
Be it the Adelaide Test or the latest Gabba Test, India’s middle order looked non-existent. Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant have been poor so far in the series. And the Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been worse. The only saving grace for Kohli is his unbeaten century in the second innings of the Perth Test.

It is surprising that India’s middle order which comprises a good balance of youth and experience has been in tatters. As for the star batters, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, things have started to appear gloomy for them. Reports indicate, that if India fails to reach the WTC Finals, it might be their end in red-ball cricket.
2 Test matches remain and India’s chances of making it to the WTC Finals continue to hang on a thread. And it is high time that Rohit and Virat contribute with the bat. The same also needs to be the mantra for Gill and Pant as well. 4 innings remain for these 4 batters who now need to go out with all guns blazing in hopes of winning the series and potentially extending their Test career.
