3 matches of the Border Gavaskar Trophy have been done and dusted, but star players Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are yet to fire in the IND vs AUS Test series. While the duo have performed in patches, none have been able to pile up big scores. And this is where the problem has been. India has failed to score runs in the middle order.
Just 2 Test matches remain as the BGT stays tied 1-1 after three Test matches. And with the World Test Championship (WTC) Finals qualifying heating up, India needs all their players to fire on all cylinders. And this means, both Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant will have to perform to their very best in the Melbourne and Sydney Tests.
Gill and Pant are unimpressive in BGT
Both Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant need to step up if India has any chance of winning this series. At the top of the order, KL Rahul has consistently played well while Yashasvi Jaiswal has been subpar after his Perth heroics. Down the order, star batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma too have been away from the runs.
This makes for case for Gill and Pant to step up. The duo are no longer youngsters and could well possibly be the next captains of the team in a couple of years. The duo already captain their respective teams in the IPL and now it is time for both to show more character.
Shubman Gill went on to miss the Perth Test after suffering from a finger injury. Rishabh Pant on the other hand was decent. He scored 37 and 1 in Perth as India registered a stunning win. Gill made a comeback in the Pink Ball Test in Adelaide, where he managed to score decent scores of 31 and 28 respectively.

While India was handed a humiliating 10-wicket loss, Gill was good but more is expected from him now. These are the matches where the player needs to step up when the team falters. It is in events like these that Gill has to convert these scores to big ones. Pant too was decent with his scores of 21 and 28.
Things were completely different in Gabba. Both the heroes of Gabba of 2021 had a horrible outing. Gill managed to score 1 while Pant managed to score 9. With the series now poised at a crucial juncture, the Indian fans would be hoping for these star batters to fire on all cylinders in the Melbourne and Sydney Tests.
