Shreyas Iyer must be a sure-shot inclusion in India’s XI for Champions Trophy without second thought

Shreyas Iyer has been in red-hot form in the white-ball formats recently and is without doubt India's best number 4 batter for Champions Trophy 2025

Shreyas Iyer is arguably one of India’s best white-ball batters currently and there is no doubt that he will find a place in India’s XI for Champions Trophy 2025. After finding himself without a BCCI Central Contract and being left out of the T20 World Cup, the Mumbai star made his comeback in the ODI series against Sri Lanka earlier this year. Since then, the man has been on a mission to find form, amass runs and prove his worth to the selectors in various domestic tournaments, both white and red-ball cricket.

Shreyas Iyer a must in India’s XI for Champions Trophy 2025

Since making his ODI debut in 2017, Shreyas Iyer found himself in and out of the team until 2021. It was in 2022 and 2023 when he made a name for himself in the 50-over format, amassing 724 and 846 runs respectively. Not that he wasn’t delivering with the bat in 2019 and 2020, but he got lesser opportunities compared to what he received two years after. With 2421 runs from 62 ODIs, Iyer has been a force to be reckoned with, especially while batting at number 4. Not to forget, his best season came in the ODI World Cup year where he featured in nearly all the matches for India at the marquee event, playing a crucial role in providing stability to the batting line-up.

Shreyas Iyer has cemented his position at number 4, amassing most runs in his ODI career at that spot. The Mumbai batter has played 33 ODIs as India’s number 4 batter and has managed to accumulate 1397 runs at a strike rate of 101.74. With four hundreds and eight half-centuries to his name as India’s number 4 batter, he is indeed the best choice for India to provide the much-needed boost to the middle-order. His ability to anchor the innings and accelerate at will makes him an invaluable asset to the Indian team.

Shreyas Iyer’s red-hot form in domestic tournaments

Shreyas Iyer has been on a mission to prove a point to the selectors with his performances in domestic tourneys. His journey started with the Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament and then went on to play red-ball cricket in Duleep Trophy, Irani Cup and Ranji Trophy. He then turned his attention to T20s, and led Mumbai to a title win in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He will next lead the domestic side in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Not to forget, Iyer has tasted some imnmense success this year, having won the Irani Cup, Ranji Trophy, SMAT and the IPL title.

With the bat, he has been most impressive recently in the shortest format of the game. It comes as good news for India ahead of Champions Trophy 2025 as they expect the batter to be in red-hot form to deliver for the team at the number four position.
