“Usman Khawaja should finish up” after IND vs AUS series: Ex-pacer calls for opener’s retirement

IND vs AUS: Usman Khawaja, despite batting well overall, has failed to come up with substantial scores in 2024.

Former Aussie cricketer Brendon Julian is a bit of a controversy creator, when it comes to the comments he makes. He had notoriously said that Virat Kohli was not gelling with the Indian coach Gautam Gambhir, and skipper Rohit Sharma. This time on his target is countryman Usman Khawaja. Julian feels that the soon-to-turn 38, the southpaw should step away after the IND vs AUS Test series.

Usman Khawaja Poor in 2024

Usman Khawaja had last scored a fifty in the pink ball Test vs West Indies, at the start of the year. “Opening the batting in this series has been extremely difficult and I think as you get older – he’s 37 … I know he’s come out in the press and said ‘I’d like to make it to the next Ashes series.’ I just can’t see that personally,” Julian told FOX Sports News.

“I actually think he probably should finish up this series in Australia, go out on a high. I just don’t like it when players try and hang on that little bit longer and as you get older and when you’re batting, you’re opening the batting against quality bowling with new balls. That is very, very difficult and as you get older, you’re just not as sharp,” he added.

IND vs AUS, Brisbane Test

To be fair to Julian, in the space of 14 innings, Khawaja has scored runs at an average of only 25. Meanwhile, Julian’s comments weren’t very well received — over Virat Kohli. He had said, “The way that Virat Kohli got out against New Zealand – for him to get out like that in that Test series was unbelievable. Kohli is not at his best. He is not gelling with the captain probably and the coach but having said that, he can quickly turn it around,” he had said.

As far as the IND vs AUS Brisbane Test is concerned, the first day of the match has been marred with rain. After twin delays, Australia were 28/0 after 13.2 overs, after being put into bat by Rohit Sharma.
