Pakistan to part ways with Jason Gillespie? Reports indicate “loss of confidence” by PCB in Australian

Pakistan is most likely bracing for yet another change as uncertainty looms over the future of red-ball coach Jason Gillespie

It looks like Pakistan is all set to play musical chairs once again, with the victim being the team’s red-ball coach Jason Gillespie this time. The Pakistan Cricket Board has reportedly “lost confidence” in the Australian and his future with the side now remains uncertain. Pakistan are set to take on South Africa in a two-match Test series starting from December 26.

Jason Gillespie’s tenure as Pakistan coach over?

As per Cricket Pakistan, the PCB may no longer trust Jason Gillespie to lead Pakistan‘s Test team in the upcoming series against South Africa. The board has also refused to extend the contract of red-ball High Performance coach Tim Nielsen, who had joined the side on the recommendation of Gillespie. A disappointed Nielsen stated that he was anticipating an extension of contract, adding that the preparation for the series against SA was progressing very well before he faced the axe.

Latest news

The report further states that Gillespie was unaware of Nielsen’s contract being terminated by the PCB. Gillespie was named Pakistan’s red-ball coach earlier this year as a part of the PCB’s revamp. Under the Australian, Pakistan lost their first-ever series at home to Bangladesh following which they secured a series victory against England.

However, PCB decided to curtail the powers of coach Gillespie and red-ball captain Shan Masood in selection matters mid-way through the series against England. The revamped selection committee led by Aaqib Javed was instead given all the powers. While Gillespie led Pakistan as the stand-in coach for the white-ball series in Australia, he was expected to continue his duties as the red-ball coach in the series against South Africa. However, the latest developments casts aspersions on the future of the Australian with the Pakistan team.
