BWF World Tour Finals: Treesa-Gayatri keep India’s hopes alive, must-win match awaits

Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand kept India's hopes alive at the BWF Finals with a crucial win, setting up a must-win clash for qualification.

In a thrilling match at the 2024 BWF World Tour Finals, India’s sole hope, the doubles badminton pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand claimed their first victory. They defeated Malaysia’s Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan in straight sets, 21-19, 21-19. The encounter lasted 48 minutes. This win was very important for the Indian pair. Both teams had lost their previous match the Chinese pair, and another loss would have meant elimination. Treesa and Gayatri played brilliantly, securing only their second win against the Malaysian duo in eight meetings.

A strong start from the pair

The Indians began well, taking an early 6-2 lead. Though the Malaysians fought back to lead 11-10 at the break, Treesa and Gayatri regained control after the interval. Despite some nervous moments, they won the first game 21-19.

The second game was a closer affair with both teams playing aggressively. Long rallies kept spectators on the edge of their seats. At 19-19, it was anyone’s game, but the Indian pair held their nerve to win the final two points.

Hope for qualification

This victory eliminates the Malaysian pair from the competition. If Treesa and Gayatri win their last group match against Japan’s Matsuyama and Shida, they will advance to the next round. This win should boost the confidence of Treesa and Gayatri, especially after their tough loss to the Chinese pair Tan and Liu in their previous match. Their improved performance and ability to handle pressure situations bode well for their future in the tournament.
