Perhaps the biggest development of them all is here. The format for the Champions Trophy 2025 might be changed from ODI to T20I. As per International Cricket Council (ICC) guidelines, the schedule for the 8-team tournament should have been announced 100 days before it starts. As the event starts on February 19, the fixtures should have been out by November 12.
BCCI vs PCB
The reason why it hasn’t been announced is due to the ongoing stalemate between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The BCCI isn’t ready to send the Indian cricket team to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy, and although the PCB accepted the hybrid model proposed by the ICC, they put forth some demands to which the BCCI didn’t agree.

Champions Trophy, in T20 format?
According to Cricbuzz, the issue won’t be resolved today (December 11) as it was previously predicted. We are just 75 days away from the Champions Trophy 2025 now, and the stakeholders fear that a solution won’t be reached soon. Therefore, a big step might have to be taken. The tournament, which has long been held in an ODI format, will be switched to T20.
Since ODIs are losing relevancy, with teams unwilling to play 50-over cricket and choosing T20s over them, it would make sense. Another thing would be that it’ll be easier to market the tournament in the T20 format. This isn’t exactly new either. It has been previously reported that the Champions Trophy would be held in a T20 format from the next edition onwards, but due to the BCCI-PCB stalemate, it might just happen next year.
