Glenn Maxwell wants to return to Australia’s Test side. The 36-year-old played some club cricket recently after failing to find a spot in Victoria for the Sheffield Shield 2024-25. Maxwell’s name came up when Cricket Australia were thinking about selection for the Sri Lanka Test tour in January-February.
Glenn Maxwell in Australia’s Sri Lanka plan
Australia’s head coach, Andrew McDonald, had said in October that the ability to play a sweep, both orthodox and reserve, would be skills that would come in handy in Sri Lanka, and Maxwell certainly has those skills. He ultimately put the onus of Maxwell’s Test return on his fitness.

Warner criticises Maxwell favouritism
However, David Warner isn’t happy about the talks of Maxwell’s selection. His former teammate feels that if Maxwell isn’t even making it into Victoria’s team, how can he selector for the Sri Lanka Test series over those who have been toiling hard in the Sheffield Shield, not just this season but for years?
“If you’re not being picked for your Shield team, then why do you deserve it? You’ve got to actually want it, to want to play four-day cricket. Unless he’s putting his hand up and playing all the club cricket stuff and all that, to want to play Test cricket, in my opinion, he doesn’t deserve that opportunity,” said Warner.
“I just don’t think you can keep putting your hand up to say, ‘I want to play just that.’ You know, it’s like me saying I just want to play in Australia—like, you’ve got to be seen to be wanting to do the work, grind it out, and do that,” he added.
