Pressure of scoring runs affecting Rohit Sharma’s captaincy? Harbhajan Singh thinks so

Rohit had faced scrutiny over his decision-making during the New Zealand series, which India lost 0-3, and also after the 10-wicket defeat at the hands of Australia earlier today.

Rohit Sharma is under heavy fire. Not just for his poor returns with the bat but also because of his decision-making in the India vs Australia 2nd Test. Having returned to the side as captain, you could argue that he faced a similar effect on the match as any of Team India‘s benchwarmers did. Much like an all-rounder, a captain has the chance to ply his trade in two facets. One might fail with bat or ball, but that doesn’t mean you can’t change the outcome with your tactics.

Questions over Rohit Sharma’s captaincy

England’s Test skipper Ben Stokes hasn’t done his team justice as an all-rounder of late, but his brilliance as captain hasn’t seen him draw much criticism. However, in Rohit Sharma’s case, it’s the complete opposite. Unlike Stokes, who’s a proactive captain, Rohit is a reactive one. Hardly, if ever, is he ahead of the game. That was all well and good because he was doing well with the bat and Team India’s performance was great, but now that the team isn’t winning and his performance has plummeted, questions are being asked.

Lack of runs affect Rohit Sharma the captain?

India’s former spinner, Harbhajan Singh, feels that Rohit’s poor form with the bat is affecting his captaincy. This could well be the case. In the first six matches of the year, Rohit scored 455 runs at 45.50, and Team India won 5 of these matches. In the next six, he’s scored 142 runs at 23.66, and Team India has won only 2. There seems to be a direct correlation.

“When such a big player doesn’t score runs, it will become a slight cause for concern. We know that Rohit has great ability and has scored a lot of runs for India. However, he didn’t score runs in this match and the previous series as well. When the runs are not scored, the pressure comes on the batter. We won’t want the Indian captain to have the pressure of scoring his own runs, as it could affect his captaincy as well. We hope that he comes back to form. The conditions at other venues like Brisbane might suit him more. He needs to leave this match behind and think about what better can be done going forward and how the team can play better because the team is more important than his form,” Harbhajan said on Star Sports.
