After winning the first IND vs AUS Test in Perth, not many would have expected India to lose the Adelaide match by a margin of 10 wickets. The batters were poor throughout, and the bowlers, except for Jasprit Bumrah, looked clueless about their next move. Mohammed Siraj was decent, but that wasn’t just enough to hand India the advantage.
Stars from the last match, Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul lacked application with the moving pink ball, while incoming skipper Rohit Sharma looked out of sorts with his captaincy and batting. As for Virat Kohli, despite failing here, there still are a lot of expectations. InsideSport takes a look at the report card of the Indian team after the Adelaide Test.
Yashasvi Jaiswal (3/10)
aJust like the previous Test, Yashasvi Jaiswal was out for a duck in the first innings, in fact, on the first ball of the match. Much was expected from him after a ton in Perth, but then he failed. In the second innings, he looked good for his 24, but his hardwork was undone by Scott Boland.
KL Rahul (4/10)
Rahul looked good for his 37 at the top of the order in the first innings, but couldn’t go on to get a big score. Much was expeccted from him after skipper Rohit Sharma moved to No. 6 to keep Rahul at the top, but he disappointed, especially in the second innings.
Shubman Gill (5/10)
After missing the 1st Test, Gill looked in his element in both the innings, where he returned with scores of 31 and 28. But his lapses in concentration did not help Team India. He could have went on to get big scores both times. In short, he failed to provide stability in the middle-order.
Virat Kohli (1/10)
It is becoming a regular sight to see Virat Kohli edge one to the keeper or at slips. That was the case in Adelaide as well where he could only score 18 runs. He should have capitalised after smashing an unbeaten ton in Perth, but was unable to do so, putting India under a lot of pressure.
Rishabh Pant (4/10)
Surprisingly, this IND vs AUS series has been bit of a struggle for Pant, who likes playing vs the Aussies, Down Under. He scored 21 and 28 in the match. On the day India lost the match, he looked to go after the bowlers right from the first over itself, and had to pay a heavy price for it.
Rohit Sharma (0.5/10)
The only reason Rohit Sharma gets 0.5 is because, he let KL Rahul open the innings. Otherwise, his batting was poor, along with his captaincy. In the first innings, he took way to long to bring on Ashwin, and kept bowling with Harshit, when he was going for runs. Getting in Ashwin for Washington Sundar, didn’t make a lot of sense either. Plus, he scored 9 runs in the match.
Nitish Reddy (7/10)
Nitish Reddy was one of the only bright spots in the match for India. Lower down the order he scored 42 & 42 for the team, that only improved the overall score, otherwise, it could have been much less. He looked good with the ball too, picking up a wicket.
R Ashwin (5/10)
Ashwin didn’t have much to do in the match. He was okayish with the ball, returning with figures of 1/53 in 18 overs, but would have hoped for more wickets. His looked in his element while batting in the first innings, where he scored 22 from as many deliveries.
Harshit Rana (1/10)
He was poor with the ball and the bat. He had no wickets in the match, and was out for a duck in both the innings, and was mighty expensive with the ball in hand. Despite boasting of good credentials as an all-rounder in FC cricket, he failed to live up to the expectations.
Jasprit Bumrah (7/10)
This man has just a lot on his plate. In the first innings, he was the best bowler picking up 4/68, followed by Siraj at 4/98. But the difference between the two was huge. The latter looked flat against the Aussie top order. So, Bumrah was the standout bowler for India again.
Mohammed Siraj (5/10)
Yes, he picked up four wickets, but somehow he isn’t the bowler who is giving a lot of confidence for now. He is one of the senior bowlers, but perhaps Prasidh Krishna should be considered for the third Test in Brisbane. He is giving quite a few runs.
