The unruly behaviour of some fans forced the Indian team to restrict public access to their training sessions for the rest of the tour.
3000 fans cause disruption
During India’s training session, around 3000 fans turned up, creating a noisy and chaotic environment. This was in stark contrast to the Australian team’s session, which saw only about 70 spectators. A senior BCCI official described the scene, saying, “It was complete chaos. No one expected so many fans to turn up.”
The massive turnout disturbed the players, prompting the cancellation of a planned fan day in Sydney before the fifth Test. “Players were very disturbed by the rude and insensitive comments that were passed,” a BCCI source shared with News 18.
Concerns over Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill
There were fears that popular cricketers like Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill might get mobbed by the crowd. Some fans even spoke loudly or live-streamed on Facebook while the players were batting, disrupting their focus. “One supporter continuously urged a player to say ‘hi’ to him in Gujarati. Another cricketer was body-shamed,” the source added.
BCCI and cricket Australia intervene
Following these incidents, the BCCI discussed the issue with Cricket Australia, requesting closed-door practice sessions to avoid distractions. Although fans are usually allowed to attend practice days in Australia, this incident led to a stricter approach.
Indian batter KL Rahul commented on the situation, admitting that practicing in front of such large crowds before a Test match felt “a little different.”
Focus shifts to Adelaide Test
The second Test between India and Australia is set to begin on Friday at the Adelaide Oval. With the disruptions behind them, the Indian team will aim to regain focus as they prepare for this crucial match.
