Yashasvi Jaiswal remains on the brink of smashing another record. The 22-year-old has been in splendid touch in 2024 and is one of three batters who have scored over 1000 runs in Test cricket. To do that while opening the batting isn’t easy. By doing so, he’s found himself in an illustrious list of batters. Less than two years into his career, Jaiswal has the chance to go past stalwarts like Virat Kohli, Rahul Dravid, Sunil Gavaskar, Virender Sehwag, and Sachin Tendulkar.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, the record-breaker
If the opener manages to score just 78 runs in the India vs Australia 2nd Test, he’ll overtake Dravid and Kohli on the list of Indian batters with the most Test runs in a calendar year. Right now, Jaiswal has got 1280 runs with a healthy average of 58.18. Considering the form he’s in, having scored 161 in his second innings, there is a good chance he can go past the two former Indian captains.
With three matches left to be played in 2024, counting the Pink Ball Test, Jaiswal has the chance to not just pass Kohli or Dravid but even Gavaskar, Sehwag, and Tendulkar. By scoring 283 runs across three matches, he can set an all-time record for India. If he gets to the 1600 mark, he’ll be just the 5th man in history to do it.
It’ll aim for the stars, but at this point, he’s 509 runs away from breaking Mohammad Yousuf’s all-time record of 1788 runs in 2006. It seems almost impossible to do that, but then again, records are meant to be broken, and he’s just hit 161 at Perth, considered to be one of the toughest venues in not just Australia but the world.
