The visitors were bowled out for just 42 runs in the 1st innings, with Marco Jansen bagging seven wickets. South Africa responded in an emphatic fashion after putting 191 runs on board in their 1st innings.

South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma, who made his return to the side for the series, led from the front with a 70-run knock in the 1st innings. He top-scored for the side while the rest of the batting order failed to fire. Despite holding the fort for a considerable period of time, Bavuma was caught out by Asitha Fernando as Proteas were bowled out for 191 runs. Lahiru Kumara and Asitha Fernando picked three wickets each.

Only two Sri Lankan batters managed to get double-digit scores while the rest of the batting order collapsed like a pack of cards. Jayasuriya became the fastest Sri Lanka bowler to take 100 Test wickets while also becoming the joint-fastest bowler to achieve the feat in the 20th century. At the end of play on Day 2, South Africa are 132/3 and lead Sri Lanka by 281 runs.
