“The kind of price..” Ashish Nehra reveals why Mohammed Shami wasn’t RTMed at IPL Auction

IPL Auction: Despite bagging 48 wickets for GT in 33 matches, Mohammed Shami wasn't considered by the team.

It was widely believed, that if Mohammed Shami was fit, GT would re-buy the Indian pacer at the IPL 2025 auction. But that wasn’t closer to reality, as the now fit Shami will play for SRH, after he was sold for 10 Cr at the auction. What was even more surprising is the fact, that GT did not even enter the bid for him, or even RTMed him.

But now GT head coach Ashish Nehra has opened up on why he was not considered for the team. In fact, the former also revealed why the RTM card wasn’t exercised for him at the IPL Auction. “Whatever he has done for GT and for India, I mean he was part of our retention (plans) also. But again, you see retention is that kind of a thing,” said Nehra, a former India pacer.

“Mohammed Shami, Shubman Gill, Rashid Khan, Sai Sudharsan — every team has so many options. Then we had RTM also, that maybe we can use RTM (at the auction) and take him; but the kind of price he went (for),” Nehra told Jio Cinema. “It doesn’t matter whatever strategy you have, when it comes to open auction, your strategy is not going to be successful all the time,” he added.

“Definitely, whatever Mohammed Shami has done for GT and those three years will always be memorable.” Meanwhile, ever since his comeback to competitive cricket, the 34-year-old has been excellent, and is being even considered for the IND vs AUS series. In the Ranji Trophy match for Bengal vs MP, he took seven wickets and went on to score crucial 39 runs.

Come the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, against Punjab, he picked up 1/46, against Hyderabad he was excellent with figures of 3/21.
