“We thought our prep is good”: Pat Cummis shows disappointment after losing to India

Pat Cummins expresses disappointment after Australia's loss, citing failed execution and emphasising the need for swift recovery and learning from mistakes.

Australia’s captain, Pat Cummins, expressed his disappointment following their defeat to India at Perth Stadium. The “mighty Aussies” lost to India by 295 runs at Perth. This is the first time Australia has lost a game in Optus Stadium. Despite the preparation and optimism leading into the match, the performance did not meet expectations for Australia.

Preparation vs Reality

Disappointed with the results, Cummins said, “Fairly disappointing. We thought our prep leading into it was good. Everyone was firing.” The team had high hopes for this match, and the preparation seemed solid. However, what unfolded on the field was quite the opposite. The captain admitted, “It’s just one of those games… not much went right. It is what it is.”

Eager to bounce back

In addressing the path forward, Cummins acknowledged the importance of moving on swiftly. “After a loss, you want to get back on the horse pretty quickly,” he said. He emphasised the need for the team to regroup and refocus on future matches. Acknowledging the multifaceted shortcomings, he pointed out, “We didn’t give ourselves a chance – a few different facets.” Cummins specifically remarked that failing to get past crucial periods late on Day 1 was a significant turning point. Had they overcome this, “things would’ve been different on Day 2.”

Learning and improving

Looking ahead, Cummins remains optimistic, drawing on the experience within the team. “There’s a lot of experience there. There will be plenty of conversations, plenty of time in the nets,” he said. Identifying areas for improvement is crucial, and Cummins is committed to understanding “what we could’ve done differently.” Team discussions and practice sessions will focus on reviewing their mistakes and strategising for better results.

Australia will be playing their second match against India in the Adieleide stadium from 6th December. It will be a special one because both teams will be playing the red ball cricket under the lights in the Day-Night Test.
