Blunders teams should avoid in IPL auction: No bids for injury-prone Wanindu Hasaranga at any cost!

It would be very foolish for any team to bid for Wanindu Hasaranga in the IPL auction given his nature of injuries

Sri Lankan all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga is the last player that any team would want to take a gamble on in IPL auction. The star has been injury-prone, and if it was not enough that he missed IPL 2024 entirely, he has also suffered blows after the season. SRH owner Kavya Maran had already expressed her displeasure over the all-rounder missing the entire season after being picked up in the mini-auction in 2023. In any which ways, Hasaranga’s track record with injuries makes him one of the players that no IPL team will or should bid for.

Why no one should bid for Hasaranga in IPL auction

Wanindu Hasaranga first entered the IPL as a replacement for Adam Zampa midway through IPL 2021. He played just two matches in that season following which he was once again picked up by RCB in 2022 for Rs 10.75 crore. Overall, he played 26 matches for RCB, managing to pick up 35 wickets in the span. He played a full season only in 2022, where he managed to bag 26 wickets in the edition. In the following season in 2023, he took nine wickets from 8 matches.

While Sunrisers Hyderabad were under the impression that Hasaranga would be valuable to them and hence acquired his services for Rs 1.5 cr in IPL 2024 auction, they were left disappointed after he ruled himself out of the entire season due to a chronic heel injury. This left SRH owners absolutely infuriated.

Latest news

While Hasaranga did return to action in the T20 World Cup in June following IPL 2024, he failed to shine as Sri Lanka were knocked out in the early stages. Once again, the all-rounder faced yet another injury concern as he was ruled out mid-way through the series against New Zealand.

With an economy rate of 8.13 in IPL and 6.93 in T20Is, Hasaranga isn’t a bad option for any side. But his history of injuries say so otherwise.

No team would want to put their money on Wanindu Hasaranga in the upcoming IPL auction. Given his inconsistency in the participation in IPL, it is highly unlikely that even RCB would try to acquire the services of the all-rounder. It is safe to say that no team should bet on the undependable all-rounder if they want to wisely spend the money somewhere else.
