“We’re ready to fire from the very first ball”: Gambhir outlines India’s strategy for Australian conditions

Gautam Gambhir emphasised the challenges of Australian conditions, backing senior players to guide the young team, and expressed confidence in Nitish Reddy's potential for success.

As India prepares for the highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, coach Gautam Gambhir acknowledged the unique challenges that are going to be posed by the hosts in the Australian conditions. Gambhir addressed the press conference on Monday in Mumbai.

According to Gambhir, the main hurdle for the Indian team will be adjusting to the broadly different playing conditions in Australia compared to India. He said, “The main challenge will be the conditions, which are very different in India compared to Australia. This applies to both the support staff and players. If we can get solid preparation, there’s nothing better. We’ve been to Australia many times, so that experience will be crucial. We’re ready to fire from the very first ball.”

Senior Players’ experience is crucial

While discussing preparations, Gambhir highlighted the important role that senior players will play in helping the team adapt. “We have a lot of experienced players who have played in these conditions. Their inputs will be crucial for the young players. We have ten days of preparation ahead of the first Test,” he added. Gambhir’s focus on the experience of players who have toured Australia before shows his confidence in the squad’s ability to handle the challenges and pass on valuable knowledge to the younger cricketers.

Backing young talent

Alongside the seasoned players, Gambhir also backed the younger players to rise to the occasion. “Nitish Reddy, we all know how incredibly talented he is. If given a chance, he will do well for the team. This is the best set of players we have selected to do the job for the country,” said Gambhir, highlighting his faith in the young lads. With a balance of experience and fresh energy, the Indian squad looks ready for a competitive series in Australia.

First match in Perth

India’s first match in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2025 will be played on Friday, 22nd November 2024, against Australia in Perth. The match will begin at 07:50 IST (02:20 GMT).
